What is PDRN? Salmon DNA Skincare Explained (2026 Guide)

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide, a purified collection of DNA fragments (50 to 1500 kDa) extracted primarily from chum salmon or rainbow trout sperm cells. Salmon is used because the DNA is exceptionally pure and low in protein contamination, the result of decades of pharmaceutical research in Italy and Korea.

In skincare, PDRN activates the A2A adenosine receptor, feeds the DNA salvage pathway, upregulates VEGF and collagen synthesis, and inhibits the enzymes that break existing collagen down. Translation: it is one of the most evidence-backed repair, anti-inflammatory and mild anti-aging ingredients you can put on your face.

Read together, these papers converge on a consistent picture: PDRN is a well-characterised regenerative ingredient with a plausible mechanism, robust cellular and animal data, and growing but still limited large-scale human evidence in topical cosmetic use.

This is the most important distinction in the entire PDRN category, and most brands avoid saying it clearly.

1. Injectable PDRN (Rejuran Healer). Direct dermal delivery, strongest evidence for collagen remodeling, scar repair and elasticity. Gold standard. Common in Korea and parts of Europe. Not FDA-approved in the US for cosmetic use.

2. Microneedling plus topical PDRN. Micro-channels significantly increase penetration of the topically applied serum. Clinics combine these two methods to amplify results without full injection protocols.

3. VT Reedle Shot (spicule delivery). Physical mineral spicules create temporary micro-channels in the skin. The closest OTC equivalent to the clinic microneedling plus PDRN approach. Noticeably more effective than standard topical application.

The VT Reedle Shot does something meaningfully different from other topical PDRN products. The CICA Reedle technology uses micro-sized mineral-derived spicules suspended in the formula. This matters because the primary limitation of topical PDRN is penetration depth. Nuance: the VT Reedle Shot's spicule technology is not appropriate during active inflammatory phases. Standard PDRN serums and ampoules without delivery-enhancing technology are generally safe during stable periods.
